Andy Warhol was born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as Andrew Warhola, with Russian roots. From 1945 to 1949 Warhol studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, graduating in painting and design. Shortly thereafter, he moved to New York, where he worked in a shoe factory and occasionally as a commercial artist. His first exhibitions, but as a graphic artist, took place at Alexander Iolas and MoMA. In 1962 he produced the first series of screen prints “Campbell’s Suppendosen” and “Coca Cola Flaschen”. His studio, in which numerous friends and assistants collaborated, was called the “Factory” by Andy Warhol. Through his involvement with the medium of film, Andy Warhol came into contact with numerous Hollywood stars and musicians and created numerous pop art motifs such as “Grace Kelly” or “Elvis Presley” as well as the record cover for “Velvet Underground”, which still serve as Andy Warhol’s trademark today. After an assassination in 1968, Warhol was seriously injured. From the 1970s onwards, numerous Polaroids were created in the famous ‘Studio 54’, which were also reworked as screen prints in the well-known Warhol style. Warhol died in New York in 1987.
