Born in 1929 in Baden near Vienna, the Austrian painter Arnulf Rainer studied at the Staatsgewerbeschule in Villach from 1947 to 1949. At first he worked in the style of fantastic realism, but in 1951 he began with overpaintings of his own and other works in a gestural-expressive way. Rainer took part in Dokumenta 6 in Kassel in 1977, and the Venice Biennale in 1978. From 1981 to 1995 he taught as a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Arnulf Rainer lives and works in the Upper Austrian town of Enzkirchen and in Tenerife.
