Biography

Donald Sultan was born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. In 1975, Sultan graduated from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago with a Master of Fine Arts. With his graphic and painterly works, Donald Sultan continues the tradition of still life painting by staging fruits, objects, and flowers in a strongly reduced form on large square surfaces, with an unmistakable reference to Warhol’s pop art icon “Flowers. In addition to still lifes, Donald Sultan is also fascinated by the expressive depiction of industrial spaces.  His works are represented internationally in major museums and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the Singapore Museum of Art, and the London Tate Modern. Donald Sultan lives and works in New York.
